HELLO! MY NAME IS MS. SOLBERG

I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Ms. Solberg and I am the school counselor at Westby Area Middle School!

My goal is to provide equitable support to every student here in middle school. I do this in three ways. First, by teaching 5th and 6th-grade guidance classes. Being in the classroom allows me to get to know each student and have the opportunity to create systemic change. Secondly, I hold 7th grade group and 8th grade individual Academic and Career Planning sessions. My hope is that every student who goes through our school has an idea of what they want their life after k-12 school to look like. Lastly, I meet with students individually. This can be due to the student seeking me out, day to day observations, or the referral of loved ones (parents, friends, teachers, or principal). All in all, I am here for the students of Westby Area Middle School in whatever way I can be.

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Viterbo University and a Master's of Science in Counselor Education - School Counseling from Winona State University. The 2024-2025 school year will be my sixth year at Westby!

Scout and Books

And this is our certified therapy dog, Scout! She's been coming to school since she passed the International Therapy Dog test a few years ago. She adores the kids, playing fetch, and giving puppy kisses. She'll be 5 years old this winter!

OUTSIDE MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING

Outside counseling is a great resource for many people. I do my best to help at the school, but I am not a clinical mental health counselor. Clinical mental health counselors or therapists are certified to diagnosis, treat, and help individuals or families with a plethora of concerns; including anxiety disorders, depression, grief, family tensions, and more. If you are interested, these are some providers in our area:

  • Scenic Bluffs (in school therapist option) - https://www.scenicbluffs.org/Our-Services/Behavioral-Health

  • Family and Children's Center - https://www.fcconline.org/service/outpatient-counseling/

  • Stonehouse Counseling - https://www.stonehousecares.com/

BULLYING

Middle school can be a hard few years for students. So much is changing, including social interactions and relationships. We work on healthy conflict resolution strategies and recognizing drama v.s. bullying in 5th and 6th guidance classes, as well as check and connect (homeroom) conversations in 7th and 8th grade. If you are worried about a situation or interaction and want to learn more about recognizing bullying, please follow this link: Bullying Information

If you would like to report a case of bullying, please follow this link: Bullying Report
